Ferndown Wayfarers Cricket Club U13 / U14 Indoor Cricket Competition
2009
The U13 / U14 Indoor Cricket Competition was held
at the Dorset Cricket Centre, Parley on 24th December 2009,
and such was the interest in the competition from the youth section,
Ferndown Wayfarers entered 3 teams – Wayfarers Warriors, Wayfarers
Wildcats and Wayfarers Wizards, bringing the total number of teams
entered to 10. The rules are as per normal indoor rules, with a few
exceptions. Matches are 5 overs long with each over consisting of 5
balls, all fielders, less wicket keeper, will bowl 1 over and a Joker
over will be nominated by the team captain where all runs scored are
doubled!
The 3 Ferndown Wayfarers teams were put into
leagues along with the other 7 teams, with the Warriors ending up in
group A and the Wildcats and Wizards in group B. With the cricket
starting at 09.30, it was very obvious from the start that it was going
to be a long day as the final was estimated to be around 17.30!

The Wildcats were the first team in action, playing
Parley Pirates. It is worth noting that the Wildcats were the youngest
team to be entered by far, with most other teams having almost 2 years
more cricketing experience! Despite that the Wildcats went on to win
their opening match, with an excellent team performance throughout. The
remainder of their group matches were fought with vigour and passion,
playing excellent cricket, however their opponents proved to be to
strong and the Wildcats finished a very commendable 4th
position in the group.
The Wizards were up next, playing Bournemouth. This
was a closely fought match, with the Wizards playing some exceptional
cricket. The match went to the final over with Bournemouth just coming
out on top. A disappointing start was soon forgotten when they played
and beat Wayfarers Wildcats and Parley Pirates, losing to Poole Town.
Their team performance and professionalism was a credit to their club
and they came 3rd in the group.
The final team to play were the Warriors, who were
probably the more experienced side in the Ferndown Wayfarers teams
entered in the competition. Their opening match was against Parley
Panthers, ending in a convincing win to the Warriors. This was followed
by 3 more wins by the Warriors, beating Christchurch, Mudeford and
Bournemouth U14’s, with the Warriors finishing top of their group. This
set up a very interesting final, with the Warriors playing Poole Town,
who beat Wayfarers last year in the final! The final, which was played
at 19.00, was worth the wait. Both teams settled down very quickly and
were eager to show their opponents that they were the better side. The
match was closely fought with Wayfarers Warriors coming out on top and
crowned Champions of the Indoor Festive Competition. A special mention
must be made to Connor Coppard, who bowled exceptionally well, who with
his over in the final took a 2 wicket maiden over, made the win against
Poole Town Possible!!
All in all, the
event was an excellent and well fought competition, and praise must go
to all the Ferndown Wayfarers players for their professionalism, both on
and off the pitch, their behaviour and attitude shown throughout the
very long day. A big thanks to all the parents who supported the teams
throughout the day and not forgetting the team managers Norma Bishopp,
Tim Sansom, Karl Searles and of course Steve Bishopp, who made the day
possible!
